New Zealand!

So I know I haven't really been posting to this blog (someday I will attain my drawing-a-day goal!) but I'm going to New Zealand for 6 months, so either I'll be making all kinds of fabulous artwork and posting like mad, or I'll be too busy hiking and swimming to photograph any of it, and you won't hear from me at all. We'll see!

Frog

I'm continuing messing around with vector illustrations of different fable animals. When I get enough of them, I'll start designing some page layouts or something. For now, I'm just having fun playing with the colors and lines!

Catch up!

Sooooo, my scanner is toast. Sad days! Thus, the following are poor photos from my webcam of my daily doodles in my sketchbook. The above is an example of a warm-up I often use--quick, easy, and gets me smiling.
This little dude is actually a stuffed animal created by my good friend Julie Gullman. I'll post a picture of the real him next time!

Julie also created the above characters--they're brown, fuzzy, one-eyed critters that represent me (with the tongue sticking out) and my friend Ashlee (with the lips). You can see more of Julie's work on Facebook!
More monsters...because they are fun to draw. I don't know why I like one-eyed, tentacled monsters so much.

This drawing and the next one are actually over a year old, but I found them and wanted to let you all know about the hilarious stories they're drawn from! My friend Kyle, a voice actor, has been reading the episodes to me, and one day I drew some of the characters. Check out the author, Brian Clevinger, and all the other cool stuff he does here: http://www.nuklearpower.com .

A old doll I found at a thrift store. She really is missing an arm, but she doesn't actually look that surprised about it.
I dont' know who or what this guy is...any ideas, anyone? Evil, rabbit-hating magician, perhaps?
This guy looks like he's in charge of a newspaper or something.

My friend Paul. :-)

That's it for now! I should be back on schedule with an (almost) daily update of doodles, as well as other projects and news.

there's a reason, folks...

...that this hasn't been updating daily as I promised. And that is that my scanner is broken. Should be fixed by the end of the week, and then there will be a whole slough of updates.

Brer Fox

These are just the outlines of a fox--later I'll color him in. Doing this reminds me that I need a Wacom tablet. Clicking and dragging all those points with a mouse takes forever!

Fun with Illustrator

One of my favorite media that I got to play with in college was relief printmaking. I love the style and process of carving, mixing and rolling the ink and putting the paper through the press. Pulling the paper off the block and seeing your printed image for the first time is like seeing an old friend after 10 years--you're delighted, and there's always something, good or bad, that you didn't expect to see.

I don't have access to a printing press anymore, but I've started messing around with a similar style in Illustrator. It's not as much fun, but it's certainly easier and allows for a lot of exploration without the risk of a stray stroke ruining 10 hours worth of work. I'll be playing around with some classic animals from fables and oral tradition in this style over the next few days.

Ready, set....

Hey guys, I decided linking to a blogspot would be a lot easier than updating my entire website every time, so here you go! Soon to be updating 6 times a week...
